You Are So Beautiful To Me
Today we visited a most unusual gallery of fine arts and crafts. Celeste and Arnie took me to the Alaska Native Medical Center to view their fine collection. The various items have been crafted by Alaskan Native people and are on display at the hospital. They have large cases in the elevator lobbies of their five floors and small cases in the stairwells. There is also a gift shop with beautiful items. We saw basketry, sculpture, scrimshaw, jewelry, carving, sewing, embroidery and more. The top photo is one of many dolls that are incredibly detailed from the faces to the clothing. Next are three waterproof pouches made from a moose bladder (top) and moose hearts. The woven baskets were amazing and it's unbelievable that they are made by hand. The bottom basket is made of salmon skin and you can see the pattern in each panel. Truly a unique experience to see some fine works of native art.
We went to lunch at a popular cafe in the downtown area and later we all had dinner at a brewery/restaurant overlooking the water. I had really delicious, fresh salmon.
