I've Been Working on the Railroad

In 1923 President Warren Harding visited Nenana to celebrate the completion of the Alaska Railroad and drive in the final spike. He was the first U.S. President to visit Alaska. The town is adorable and notice the beautiful flowers at the Visitor Center and Railroad Depot. Many murals adorn buildings all over Alaska and they are colorful and interesting to view. Notice the grass growing on the roof of the Visitor Center. That is not uncommon as it provides insulation and many homeowners grow crops on their roof to keep them away from moose, deer and other animals. Nenana is famous for its yearly contest to guess when the ice will melt on the Nenana River. Each year they sell hundreds of thousands of chances at $2.50 each with the prize going over $300,000. You get to pick the exact day, hour and minute that the ice breaks up. They set a tripod out on the river with a bell in it and when the bell rings, that is the official time. We bought a few chances and will enjoy waiting to see if we are the winners.Posted by Picasa
