I'm An Indian Too

This title is from Annie Get Your Gun when she is adopted by Chief Sitting Bull. Today we went to Little Big Horn and saw the battlefield where Sitting Bull and four Indian nations defeated George Armstrong Custer and the US Army. I was so moved to be at this site and understand what happened here. We went to a ranger lecture and he explained the economic and social circumstances that precipitated this massacre. Jeff is standing on Last Stand Hill with markers showing where each soldier or civilian fell. There is a marker here for Custer, but he is buried at Arlington Cemetery. I was teary to see the stone in memory of the horses lost here. Near the end of the battle Custer and his regiment shot their horses and used the animals as shields. The horses were later buried at the site. The bottom photo shows a sculpture in the Indian memorial. Each of the four tribes has a display with names of the lost warriors and those wounded also. There is also a national cemetery in this national monument area.
