How Lucky Can You Get

After resting we took the campground shuttle downtown for the evening festivities. We had a scrumptious dinner at the Deadwood Social Club, an Italian bistro with great northern Italian food. We both ordered South Dakota specialities. I had the state bird, smoked pheasant over fettucine in a cream sauce. To die for fits the dish. Jeff had a steak, as the state is known for its beef. He was smacking his lips. We had the best waiter, Matt, who took excellent care of us as we sat at a high table on their rooftop. Afterwards we threw some pennies into a slot machine and then watched the apprehension of Jack McCall. This man had shot Hickok in the back while he was playing cards and holding the now famous "dead man's hand." We then trudged to the Masonic Temple where the trial is held every night. The same actors played all the parts and turns out they are a musical group also. We enjoyed their bluegrass, folky tunes and sang along. The trial was slapstick and well done. Kids from the audience were the jurors and Jeff was selected to be one of the witnesses (photo #4 in the hat) and did a great job. McCall was found "not guilty" as he is every night and was in real life. A year later he was retried and hung.
