Back in the USSR (USA)
Almost to Hyder we see phone poles anchored in piles of rock to keep them from tipping over. There's permafrost below. Finally arrive at Hyder, 38 miles from the Cassiar Highway, and drive down the main (packed dirt) street. There are no US customs at the border with Canada as there is no place to go from here. Hyder is surrounded by mountains and the only way out is back through Stewart, BC, and Canadian customs. Hyder has no police, medical facilities or schools. Stewart provides all of that for the residents. Most of the people who live here have come to visit and stayed on a whim. The town is looking very depressed with lots of empty buildings and "for sale" signs on many properties.
