Muskrat Love
Started off the day visiting the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. We saw boats enter from both sides and raised and lowered 21 feet to go from/to Lake Huron and Lake Superior. Boats up to 1000' long can enter the locks. It was really cold and I wore a knit scarf and gloves as well as a heavy sweatshirt and heavy polar fleece over my clothes. The locks are adjacent to the St. Mary River which separates the U.S. and Canada.
After a hot cocoa break and later lunch at "Jeff's 50's Diner" we drove west across the upper peninsula. We spent several hours driving through the Seney National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge was created by FDR in 1935 and is 96,000 acres. Jeff and I took a seven mile road through the preserve and saw bald eagles, ospreys, trumpeter swans, sandhill cranes, geese, muskrats and more. Lots of birds and probably loons in the distance and we saw a white tailed deer. It is a great place to explore and wish we could have spent more time. The third photo shows two sandhill cranes and they are brownish due to the water in this area. We had seen cranes in Florida and they were grey with a red cap. Photo two is a muskrat and four is a trumpeter swan, the largest swan, and we should see many more in Alaska. Last photo is the lonely, beautiful road west.
