Blues in the Night

The most incredible night at the opening night of the jazz festival. It is beyond our expectations and we are so pumped by the talent we saw tonight. Lets start at the beginning.

Woke up and Jeff was not feeling great, so we hung out and headed to David around 10:00. Our mission was to return our rental car and get another for the remaining days of our stay. The insurance provided by our credit card runs out after 30 days, so we needed to make the switch at the David airport. On the way we stopped at the bus station in David to purchase tickets for our trip to Costa Rica. This place is a huge madhouse with buses, shops and people everywhere.

Luckily we found a place to park and the went into a shipping office to get the location of the bus that goes to San Jose. At the tiny ticket office we found a lovely lady in line who spoke some English. She was able to find out for us that the bus Jeff had found online does not pick up passengers here and the Copa bus is our only choice. You have to purchase in person as they need your passport to issue the ticket. With our newly acquired Spanish skills we were able to tell the agent the date and time that we wanted. Found out there are assigned seats and we have seats 1 and 2. Guess we are the first to purchase for this bus.

So now we drive to the small airport and exchange the car and make arrangements to return it the morning we leave and then take a cab to the bus station. With our errands done we drive back to our condo to do Spanish homework and take naps. We had one day off last week from school and Friday morning is our make up day.

We got ourselves ready for the dinner and concert tonight and headed over to The Rock, a restaurant where the event will be held. As we got out of the car we saw a double rainbow.

It is a good size place and they have added a large tent in the back with another tented stage area. We waited in line to get our wristbands for the weekend and another for the dinner tonight. We found a table in the VIP area and saved seats for our friends Alina and Greg. The room eventually held 300 - 400 people and a buffet dinner was served.

Then the music started and we were blown away by the sheer talent. First a blues slide guitarist/singer, Ron Hacker, from New Orleans. Then Guy Davis, another blues guitarist/singer who has appeared on Broadway and really got the room swaying. Next was a piano guy, Lance Anderson, who was fantastic. A gal came out and played sax on a few songs. Then she headed over to the keyboard and they played together. Her name is Deanna Bogart and she was the next performer on the piano.

Amazing is the only way I can describe it. She had three guitars and a harmonica with her and we were all into it by now. People were moving, dancing, bobbing and truly enjoying. The another guitar, Joe Luis Walker, and a long jam with two guitars that started with "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and kept on going. One of the performers has to fly home Saturday as he has been nominated for a Grammy and needs to be at the awards presentation. All the performers are so friendly and we got to meet Deanna and chat a bit.
What a fantastic night. They only stopped because it started to rain and water was coming in the stage area. With all the electric wires and stuff it was too dangerous to continue. Heck - we have all weekend to look forward to.
