Bye, Bye Miss American Pie

Photos - Horned Puffin, Jeff and friend, Exit Glacier
We started off today by visiting the Alaska Sea Life Center. This is a first class aquarium and wildlife research facility. They also rehab animals and we got to see some playful seals and sea lions. We stood in front of the puffin and murre room for a long time and could have stayed all day if we had the time. These sea birds are fascinating and so much fun to watch. One puffin perched on the shoulder of a researcher and she said he is quite a character.

Later we visited Exit Glacier. It got it's name because some folks were exploring the ice field and found this glacier where they could exit. The Harding Ice Field feeds most of the glaciers in the Kenai Peninsula and is the largest ice field in North America. Believe me there is lots of snow and ice around here.

Exit Glacier has a nice visitor center and we took a guided walk with a ranger. He showed us how the glacier has been receding since 1900 and we stood at the terminus of the ice and the hiked up to stand beside the glacier.
