Cloudy

Another rainy day as we travel to Homer. This is Jeff's favorite place in Alaska and it is a beautiful setting. The drive is along streams and rivers and lots to see. We stop at the wood carving village where we enjoyed exploring last year. It is too early for anything to be open so we poke around and leave.

In Soldotna we walk down to the fish walk to look for salmon, but see none. There is a large bald eagle sitting on a rock and that is pleasing. This is the town where we got stuck in sand last year and had to have the RV towed out. We stayed on main roads this year and safely passed the area.

We arrived in Homer and got everything set up in the campground. We drove over to Homer Spit and had fresh halibut fish 'n chips for dinner. A spit is a geological term for a narrow piece of land that juts out from the mainland. Homer Spit used to be larger, but most of it was sunk in the tsunami following the 1964 earthquake. Today it is quite narrow with one two lane road. Along the sides are campgrounds, fishing holes, marinas and boardwalk shopping areas. Restaurants and charter fishing operations make up most of the businesses along with gift shops.
