Day 6 and we travel to Teslin Lake. This morning is bright and sunny, but only 34 degrees. Again we see some animals and feel lucky. There is a group of three caribou who run away. I mentioned to Jeff that the caribou are always a group of three and he replies that it is a feng shei thing. I thought it very funny. The scenery today is spectacular with large, icy lakes and snowy mountains.
Just before our campground we see a young woman running alongside the highway holding a ceremonial type pole with streamers. It turns out the woman is a First Nation member and a group is running from Alaska to Panama this summer. First Nation is a term used here to describe Native Canadians, Eskimos and other indigenous people. The run is done every four years to promote peace and friendship.
Today's drive is ony 161 miles and we arrive at our destination by mid morning. Still cool, but a glorious day and we are camped at the edge of the lake. I venture down to the shore with my camera and binoculars and see three different types of ducks as well as flighty yellow warblers flitting in the thickets. I had spotted two large birds in the top of a pine on the drive in and I think they were juvenile eagles. So it is a good birding day for me.
We visited the wildlife gallery which we remembered from last year and rested most of the afternoon. Later we have a group dinner here at the campground restaurant. Tomorrow we head to Whitehorse which is a big city and lots to see and do.
