One More Look

Today we drive from from Denali to Talkeetna. Before we leave the area I drove 12 miles into the park to catch one more glimpse of Denali. It is peeking out this morning and worth the drive. We head south on the Parks highway and there are numerous pull outs along the road to catch yet another view of the great mountain. We stop at one large parklike area and have a picnic lunch and chat with a tour bus driver. Along the way we saw the huge igloo building which at one time must have been an inn or restaurant.

Arriving in Talkeetna we found a cute little town reminiscent of the Catskills with little shops and cafes. This is rumored to be the town that the TV show Northern Exposure was set in and the townfolk are much like the characters on that show. So friendly and anxious to chat. We walked into town and visited with the resident reindeer and skipped stones on the river. Found a good bakery and a surprisingly good pizza place owned by a couple from Pennsylvania.

Mountain and river views everywhere and a place we could stay in for a while and feel comfortable. The coming weekend will be the annual Moose Dropping Festival and the place was jumping with visitors.
