Strike Up the Band

Happy July 4th!
It's good to be in the USA for Independence Day and our RVs are all decked out with flags and other patriotic stuff. I am wearing a tee shirt I bought in Denali Park on July 4th last time we were here.

Jeff and I slept until 9:30am and awoke to a hot, sunny day. The temperature got up to 88 degrees today - surprise for those of you who think that Alaska is always cold. To celebrate we spent the afternoon at Pioneer Park with another couple from our trek. The park was having an all day 4th of July event. We enjoyed listening to the Air Force Band of the Pacific who are stationed in Anchorage. They were terrific and they also broke into smaller groups and the Dixieland band was fun and had a great singer. There were other musical groups around the park and a parade with bagpipes and local kids. We took a train ride around the perimeter of the park and visited the airplane museum.

Pioneer Park was built to commemorate Alaska's Centennial in 1967. They brought in original log buildings from Fairbanks and recreated a street. The buildings now house gift shops, an Alaska tradition. It was a delightful way to spend the fourth and then we went back to our RV to relax.
