Eve of Destruction

Today is Canada Day, a national holiday similar to the 4th of July. The town of Whitehorse will be having a parade and other festivities but we are up early and on the road. Our goal today is to reach Destruction Bay which will be our last night in Canada for a while.

Much of the day is spent traveling through Kluane (Clu-an-ee) National Park which is too beautiful for words to express. Just imagine mountains on every side, waterfalls, trees, lakes, colorful wildflowers and fresh, fresh air. We just can’t believe that it gets better each day. The Yukon is a very special place and must be seen to be appreciated.

We went through Haines Junction and stopped to see the park visitor center and then had lunch at the Haines Bakery. It was restful to sit outside in the bright sunshine and enjoy some peace and quiet. Later that afternoon the highway followed Kluane Lake, the largest in Canada, with many bridges and beautiful scenery. We stopped at Sheep Mountain, but weren’t lucky enough to see any Dall sheep.

Finally arrived at Cottonwood RV Park and found it to be an oasis of trees and flowers resting on a beautiful lake with a backdrop of snow capped mountains. Jeff and I joined some trek mates in a game of hillbilly golf and at night our group had a campfire and brave souls told stories, jokes and played camp games. I read a poem about the Yukon by Robert Service and Jeff played his guitar and sang a macabre song. Just in case you don’t know Robert Service – he is a famous poet of the Yukon and known as well here as Jack London.
