The Greatest Love of All

Monday we travelled to Denali National Park, home of Mt. McKinley, the great (or highest) one. It is the tallest mountain in North America.

The day started out early with me preparing coffee at 5:15am. Several of our group members leave by 6am and we clean up the coffee at 9am, unless everyone is gone earlier. Today two group members had problems that needed fixing in town and we waited for them to finish leaving around 10am.

The drive was magnificent with mountains and greenery. We were on the Parks Highway and it was curvy and hilly, but well paved. Numerous pull out areas gave us a chance to stretch our legs and walk Ziggy while admiring the scenery. We stopped in the small town of Nenana for lunch and shopping. This town has an annual Ice Classic where you guess the date and time the ice will break on the Tanana River. This has been going on since the early 1900's so we took a chance and hope we win next May. This year's prize was over $300,000.

Arrived at the Denali Rainbow Village & RV Park late afternoon and found it to be a gravel lot stuffed with motorhomes and trailers. The location is great so we are happy to be here. There is a row of little shops within walking distance and two Princess hotels are across the street. We are only 1 mile from the park entrance. After a nice siesta we had dinner and took a drive in the park. You are allowed to bring a private vehicle on the road for 15 miles. Beyond that you have to take a bus or ranger tour.

Along the road we saw lots of snowshoe hares and one lone caribou. We were able to catch a glimpse of Denali (the mountain) from one area and saw just the bottom as the top was shrouded in clouds. It is impressive!
