Santa Baby

It's Saturday and we get to sleep late. This morning we are visiting the University of Alaska Museum and Botanical Gardens. Fairbanks is the main campus for the university and the grounds are impressive on a hill overlooking the city. There are many modern buildings and the museum is made of a light colored metal with curved and pointy shapes. They had an outstanding exhibit of Alaska history, geology and wildlife as well as native artifacts and culture. Upstairs was an art gallery with many interesting pieces. The photo is me sitting in a decorated outhouse.

The botanical garden was colorful and had flowers and vegetables. They are working on tomato plants that yield tomatoes in the short growing season. All the plants here are huge and bright colors, probably due to the long hours of sunlight and rich soil. Everywhere you go there are gorgeous planters with annuals overflowing.

Our afternoon activity was a visit to the town of North Pole. We stopped at a tiny diner for lunch and the food and service was good. At North Pole we sent some mail so it would have the famous post mark. Then we visited Santa's workshop where we met the jolly guy and the Mrs. They were lovely folk and hard at work getting ready for the holiday season. The whole place was a hoot and they even have reindeer outside in a paddock.
