Born Free

It's Thursday and another free day for us. The sun is shining and I feel so lucky to be on such a wonderful adventure. Not many people I know are able to take this much time to travel and see the beauty and wonder of our world. Up here there are so many tourists you'd think that no one works any more. There are cars, buses and RV's everywhere. We've seen some tourist families, but most folks are seniors who are living their dream.

Today's plan is to visit the University of Alaska Large Animal Research Center. We drove out past the modern looking campus to a hilly farm where the university has muskoxen, caribou and reindeer. Our tour was lead by a student who told us all about these animals. The muskox are weird looking and their smooth outer hair grows their entire life touching the ground on some adults. Underneath they have another layer of dense wool called qiviut. I have a hat/scarf thing made of qiviut that I bought here in 1996. It is so warm I have never worn it.

We enjoyed learning about the caribou and one adult male named Bailey had quite a personality and a huge rack of antlers. Unbelievably we had forgotten our camera so thanks to our trek mates Diane & Don for the pictures. On the way home we tried to find the float plane lake, but my map reading skills need some work and we never got there.

A long nap was the afternoon activity and a walk around the campground and listening to a thunderstorm completed the night.
