Funiculi, Funicula

Today we rode on a funicular. Part of the Bosch tour that I created. We woke up early and took the hotel's trolley to the Metro station at Universal Studios. Beautiful mosaics of American history.

Then we took the subway to Union Station in downtown LA. There was a guy playing the piano and he was terrific!

The subway was clean and on time. We got off and walked a few blocks to the Grand Central Market. Along the way we passed Olivera Street.

Many large buildings, a farmer's market with beautiful fruits and vegetables and street art.

Also saw the famous Bradbury Building which has been seen in many movies.

At the market

we walked along the rows of bakeries, restaurants and all kinds of foods. Jeff had breakfast at a stand while I chose to wait in line for Eggslut. We learned of this chain watching Bosch, an Amazon detective series that we enjoy. There is always a line and the food was delicious and a large portion.

I had the Fairfax sandwich, scrambled eggs, spicy sauce, carmelized onions, avocado on a brioche bun. Not your usual breakfast sandwich.

After eating we went around the block to Angel's Flight, a one block funicular. Established in 1901, it is an historical landmark. The tracks have been moved and the orange cars refurbished, but still a popular thing to do in LA.

The ride only takes a minute up a steep hill and we walked around at the top for a while. Rode back down and ready for our next adventure.

The steep stairs you need to climb instead of the ride

We used Uber to drive us to the Hollyhock House. This is a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Barnsdall family. The house sits in a park atop a hill with great views of the city. We took a self guided tour with many docents explaining things inside the house. It is typical Wright architecture with a Mayan theme. Barnsdall's favorite flower was the hollyhock and Wright uses this flower design all through the interior and exterior. The dining room chairs have the flower design. The fireplace has a bas relief showing  the four elements of nature. A water moat flowed at one time in front of the fireplace. Unfortunately photos are not allowed inside the house.

We could see the observatory at Griffith Park from the grounds.

The LA Municipal Art Gallery was located on the Barnsdall Park property.

We walked down lots of stairs and around the corner to get on the Metro which took us back to Universal Studios. We walked along Sunset Boulevard.

The hotel trolley picked us up and we returned for much needed naps. Lots of pigeons as we waited.

Dinner was in trendy Burbank with Jeff’s cousins and some of their friends. 12 of us met at the Market City Caffe which is a good Italian restaurant. I had their special four cheese ravioli and Jeff had a lamb ragout over bow ties. It was so good to spend time together and get to meet Andrew, the groom, and also some other wedding guests. We had so much fun being together and so glad we came out for the wedding. Afterwards Jeff and I strolled a bit. There were lots of people out on the streets and enjoying the beautiful evening. We took another Uber back to the hotel and ready for bed.
