By the Sea...

Our last day in San Diego. Slept late and did our laundry to prepare for our week in Los Angeles. We drove through downtown and headed out to Point Loma, a spit of land alongside San Diego Bay. This is home to the Third Fleet of the Navy. Lots of ships and activity here as we saw on our boat trip yesterday from the water. We passed a military cemetery as we made our way to Cabrillo National Monument. Named for the explorer who discovered this area, it is a natural delight with hills and cliffs and tidal pools along the Pacific's edge.

We saw a movie about tidal pools and wandered around the visitor center which has great views looking back to the city and Coronado. There is a statue of Cabrillo located on a point high above the ocean.

I walked up a hill to a lighthouse and hoped to see Peregrine Falcons who nest on the nearby cliffs. Did not find the nest, but did see a large bird fly overhead and think it is a Falcon, maybe a gull!

We drove down to the water's edge to explore the tidal pools. Although it was just past low tide, we saw no shore birds or marine life. Just limpets resting on the rocks which we had just learned about in the movie.

We stopped at a great seafood market for lunch and sat on their deck overlooking a marina.

Pelican in flight

Great Blue Heron, weird coloring, juvenile?

On the way home we saw this Osprey, a marine tilt-rotor plane that can fly as a rotary wing helicopter or as a conventional airplane. Notice the propellers are rotated up for slow flight.

Back at home we prepared for dinner. Marty and Allan's son John and his wife Sylvia were the dinner guests along with their son Will and his dog Ziggy. We had not seen them in years and it was great to talk and find out where life has taken them.

Now we are packed and ready to roll in the morning.
